It is a typical South African example of this varietal, showing concentrated violet, blackpepper and spiciness. It's velvety elegance will be enhanced by a few more years in the bottle. Reserve this wine for imaginitive dishes with overtones matching the spicy pepperiness of Shiraz - oxtail, vennison, goulash. And what about an adventure with ostrich?

Michael Fridjhon review in Business Day

In the Arts & Leisure, Wine, section of Business Day on Wednesday, 6th May, Michael Fridjhon wrote:

'No-one readily admits to buying cheap wine, but these days there are not many who would proudly acknowledge consuming the really expensive stuff in case they're accused of schadenfreude.  Of course there's plenty of good value wine to be found, but it usually comes with Buyer's Own Brand packaging and can only be offered at braais and picnics without costing more in 'face' than it does in rands.

There are some smartly packaged inexpensive offerings, but from the snob perspective these involve the tight-rope walking exercise of wondering whether your guests know the bottles don't cost as much as their appearance suggests.

Chief among these is Leopard's Leap, a high volume, surprisingly well priced range that looks and tastes as if it sells for twice the price.  Some of the wines going into the blends come from the Rupert family estates.  However, whether the fruit is La Motte or L'Ormarins or simply obtained from any one of a thousand growers seeking a market for their production, the net effect is impressive.

I remember tasting the range a few years ago and thinking that it was just adequate.  The current releases are a considerable step up.  The premium selection - such as the Shiraz 2007 - sells for between R35 and R40.  The entry level wines - marketed under the Lookout label - are priced in the mid-R20's.  Here the Cabernet-Shiraz- Cinsaut blend as well as the Chenin Blanc-Colombard-Chardonnay are both well worth tracking down.

Spice up your Easter with a Wine and Chocolate pairing…

Leopards Leap wines and Lindt chocolate have joined forces to bring you the positively decadent pairing of delicious, tantalising wine and sinful chocolate this Easter.

Imagine a rich, velvety Leopards Leap Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot with coffee and toffee undertones washing over a sliver of Lindt Excellence Mint Intense, a luxurious, smooth and refined dark chocolate blended with a natural essence of refreshing peppermint.  Then, consider a sip of the supreme Leopard’s Leap Family Collection Shiraz/Mourvedre/Viognier, a typical example of the Rhône style, with a nose dominated by red berry flavours with spicy undertones. Match that with a nibble of Lindt Excellence Origins Madagascar 65% Cocoa, for a taste sensation of note.  For those with a sweeter, yet still mature and more discerning tooth - the dry yet fruity Lookout Pinotage Rose which offers red berry flavours such as strawberry and raspberry on the nose and palate, with a square of Lindt Excellence Extra Creamy offers pure chocolate pleasure.

Happy Easter.

Adopt a Spot with Leopards Leap and the Cape Leopard Trust

The Cape Leopard Trust (CLT), headed up by Quinton Martins, has recently launched a new fundraising initiative called Adopt a Spot.   The Adopt-A-Spot Programme is the most recent sponsorship option that allows you ‘time share’ of one of the leopards under the research of the Cape Leopard Trust.

The cost of adopting a spot is R500 for the entire year. In return, the Cape Leopard Trust would send the spot adopter photographs and information on that particular leopard on a quarterly basis. This allows many people access to information on a leopard through the adoption of a spot of the leopard they chose. This is also a great opportunity for schools and smaller companies to get involved that might not have been able to afford the costly adoption of a leopard.

For more information on the Cape Leopard Trust or to adopt a leopard or leopard spot please visit their website

Leopard's Leap will donate profit from the sale of special 3-wine packs to Food4All.

Elite of British Acting Enjoy Leopard’s Leap

Image006

Image014

We recently sponsored the prestigious 11th annual BIFA awards where some of Britain's best-known actors and actresses gathered to celebrate the British film making industry.

Amongst celebrities that were seen sipping Leopard’s Leap wines were Ralph Fiennes, who seemed to be enjoying the red and Keira Knightley who stuck to the delectable white.

This is the second year that we have sponsored the red carpet event, which was held at the Old Billingsgate market on Lower Thames Street.

"Leopard's Leap is very pleased with the sponsorship of the British Independent Film Awards. Making a great movie is much like crafting a fine wine: equal parts science and magic. We are very pleased that the cream of British acting enjoyed fine South African wine whilst being recognized for their brilliance," commented Marius Kotze, marketing and sales director Leopard’s Leap.

Wine, Cocktails and Chocolate

Peppered Leopard crp Three words that match together very well indeed. For those of you who like any of, or a combination of wine, chocolate and cocktails, be sure to come and visit our stand at the annual RMB Winex in Johannesburg, held at the Sandton Convention Centre, from the 28th of October until the 31st of October.

We will be showcasing all of our existing and new wines. Some of the new ones include our Leopard's Leap 2007 Merlot and our flagship Leopard's Leap Family Collection 2006 Shiraz/Mourvedre/Viognier. We'll also be preparing a selection of our new ever popular wine cocktails. (They were an absolute hit in Cape Town!)

Then something new, we are hosting a wine and chocolate pairing in association with Lindt Chocolate. We were lucky enought to do a full pairing of our range with one of Lindt's master chefs and the result is a phenomenal and delectable pairing. So come and chat to us at the stand where our winemaker and the Lindt Chef will be talking you through the pairing.

All info on the show available here: http://www.winex.co.za/jhb-details.asp
